Saudade Design Studio is an interdisciplinary team with its own studio in Pòrtol, Marratxí. We draw the house, price it and build it with the same people, right across the island.

The name

Why we are called Saudade

Saudade is a Portuguese word for the longing you feel for a place. We kept it because it explains what we try to do in every house: make something new without erasing what was already there. The stone, the lime, the clay tiles and the island trades are not decoration — they are the starting point.

We work for people buying or renovating their own house in the Balearics — not for investors. That difference shows in the timescales, in the materials and in the way we explain things.

Our story

We started out drawing houses. We ended up building them.

We came together over a shared enthusiasm: design, architecture and the urge to turn an idea into somewhere you can live. The team was built across trades — 3D visualisation, interior design, landscaping and project management — and over the years we worked our way through the whole project, from the first drawing to handing over the keys.

From visualisation to the full design: at first we drew what other people built.
From design to construction: today we build it too, with our trades and our site manager.
From the one-off commission to the long relationship: most clients come back for the next house.

One team, start to finish
The people who draw the project are the ones who price it and the ones who build it. There is no third party to point at when something does not fit.
A fixed, itemised quote
Measured and written by the people who will build it. Every variation is priced and signed before it is carried out.
A report every week
Two pages with the progress, the spend to date and the decisions outstanding. You read it on your phone and answer with a yes or a no.
Our own studio in Pòrtol
Fifteen minutes from Palma. This is where the projects are drawn, the samples are seen and the decisions are made, with you in the room.
A year of aftercare
We go back over anything that moves during the first year. If something is wrong, putting it right is our responsibility.
Spanish, English and Portuguese
A good part of the people who hire us do not live on the island. We work in their language and decide over video call.
